Bourne defeated by the men from the Fens

On Saturday Bourne’s 1st team face Wisbech in the first meeting between the two clubs in a number of years. With the Wisbech 1st XV playing in the RFU London 3 (North East) division, it was clear that their second string would be no fools.

Bourne fielded a re-jigged side, with a blend of youth in the back line complemented by the evergreen Rod Asher. Bourne have become accustomed to dominating the set-piece in recent weeks, and this week proved no different as the forwards had the upper hand over their counterparts.

The visitors were able to open the scoring but Bourne quickly hit back, with Dean Smith launching an enormous drop goal from his own 10 metre line. Further scores followed for Wisbech, before the ebullient John Hume went on a rampaging run through the opposing defence to score.

As half time came and went an experienced head was needed. That came in the form of Donk Hill, who rolled back the years in his return to the 1st team. Ever alert, the prop spotted a gap around the base of a ruck, and used his trademark acceleration to dash the 20 yards to the line to score, with Dixon adding the conversion.

Unfortunately the visitors then put the game to bed with a further try, but this proved a useful run-out for Bourne before they face Andy Rowe’s All-Stars this weekend.

Bourne RUFC: Richard Chappell; Rod Asher, Mark Needham, Xanti Xipu, Martin Cuffe; Tom Dixon, Dean Smith; Donk Hill, Simon Sleight, Martin Brown, Jay Rock, John Adams, John Hume, Andy Sims, Glen Smith.
