As seems to be the case most weeks Bourne had a vastly changed team to the one the previous week, but still look reasonably strong on paper, this was shown in with the early pressure when Tom Douglas popped up on the wing in the first minute, only to be put into touch just short of the line. Bourne continued to pressure through the forwards, with Faversham, Cook Jnr and Bonham all taking the ball forwards for continued pressure.
Against the run of play some bad ball handling lead to Donnington collecting the ball and score in the corner for the first score of the game. The margin was shortened 5 minutes later from a Jack Berry Penalty from out wide.
After another knock on in the backs, some slack tackling led to another score under the posts, which was converted. The final 20 minutes of the half were spent camped on the Donnington line. Clean line out ball was won again and again by Ed Cooke, but Bourne’s backs did not have their stick mitts on and failed to score from all the pressure. Half Time 12-3.
Again Bourne were busiest in the 2nd half with a couple of good breaks from Aiden Smith and Jack Berry eventually falling apart due to bad handling, it was the pattern of the game and all the extra effort to take control was tiring the Bourne forwards out. After a knock on close to their own line from Captain Cooke the resulting scrum led to the tired Bourne pack being pushed over for a try which was converted. In the last 10 with subs, Thomas, Mabey and Patterson on Bourne had their chances, Thornburn and Bonham interchanged passes down the wing but Bonham was held up just short of the line, other attacks were also held up by a determined Donnington defence. Final score 19-3.
Although some positives can be taken from the game Bourne should be winning these matches, if they played and trained as a team as both spirit and fitness did seem lacking.
