After their hard-fought league win against Deeping , Bourne were full of confidence going into their NLD Vase quarter final against Gainsborough.

To further boost the team coach Dave Maudsley returned to the line-up along with George Lindley, Donald Sweeting and Sam Thornburn. The most notable omissions were the influential Jack Berry at full back and 1st XV captain and number 8 Tom Dixon. Conditions were good on the day and after a pre-match luncheon a decent crowd all was set for a flowing game of rugby.
Straight from the start the Bourne forwards put Gainsborough under pressure forcing them to kick away possession which was easily covered by Rob Bentley starting at fullback for the day; Rob Bentley carried the ball forward before passing to Donald Sweeting who took the ball into contact. Again Bourne forwards were first there and Gainsborough were penalised under the presuure. Skipper Adam Binns stepped up to make the kick from out wide on the twenty-two making it 3-0 after three minutes.
A lapse in concentration from the kick off led to the big Gainsborough pack putting the pressure on which then resulted in a penalty of their own allowing them to even the score at 3-3 after six minutes. Bourne were straight back on the attack and a solid scrum enabled No 8 Andy Brown to give Xanti Xipu good clean ball, Maudsley shipped the ball along the back line which led to Sweeting finding himself in plenty of space for an easy score under the posts; Binns converted making it 10 – 3. There was no letting up for Bourne as more quick ball allowed Maudsley to time a great pass putting Thornburn into space 30m – not surprisingly no one was stopping him from here as he powered under the posts to score, again converted by Binns 17 – 3.
The solid platform given by the front row of Jason Rushton, Chris Wheeler and Ian Knight was making life easy for the backs. Maudsley this time, carrying out a double miss move, threw a chance off-load to Rob Bentley running a great line from full back to score under the posts. Adam Binns added the points making it 24 – 3. It was then the turn of winger Sweeting to show his individual skills after a 30m run his clever little chip-and-chase saw him outpace the opposition defence to collect his own ball and score in the corner taking the scoreline to 29 – 3.
Bourne seemed to switch off then for the remainder of the half and some indiscipline allowed the Gainsborough forwards to take a couple of quick penalties and drive themselves over in the corner to make the half time score 29-8.
Bourne’s lacklustre end to the first half continued into the second half and the first ten minutes were again fairly even. Eventually Bourne enjoyed a good period of sustained pressure with some decent recycling by the forwards and replacement scrumhalf JD Charlton before Dave Maudsley found himself in possession; throwing a big dummy pass he dived to score himself. 36 – 8 once Adam Binns had added the conversion.
Gainsborough played a big part in the game and did not look like giving up at all, putting in an impressive defence shift. This kept Bourne at bay for some time which lead to a frustrating stalemate for the home side. Dave Maudsley took to kicking down field in a bid to pin Gainsborough back and tire them out – some average kicking was saved by the impressive chasing from the Bourne backline and hard work by the forwards keen to support. The pressure applied by Bourne when Gainsborough tried to run the ball back led to a number of turnovers and with players scattered over the field Bourne were allowed the chance to link a number of forwards and backs quite nicely. The next score on came on the hour mark when Sam Thornburn turned provider after some good teamwork allowing Joshua Jordan Boddey to finish in the corner. Too far out to convert the score remained 41 – 8.
Bentley added two more tries, the second being an impressive solo effort when his wide arc started in his own half before he went round the entire Gainsborough backline before cutting at the last minute between the final two defenders allowing him to cross untouched. Sam Thornburn added a final try with relative ease against the Gainsborough side that were finally tiring. The final score finished 62 – 8 to Bourne with nine tries being scored and Adam Binns adding 17 points via the boot.
Despite all the tries coming from the Bourne backs this was very much a result of the platform built by the forwards. The set-pieces worked relatively well and there were some good shifts about the park from a number of the forwards. Bradley Hiscocks applied himself physically at the breakdown and Tom Douglas started roaming the pitch like the ball carrier he aspires to be. Andrew Brown’s second game in succession showed what valuable asset he will be throughout the season and John Hume made a welcome return after a rest week. Danny Gill was as effective as ever, being consistently one of the best forwards to make the side and Ian Knight proved to a be as useful as ever despite a lay-off of a number of years!
