Bourne returned to winning ways last Saturday with an emphatic win over last years Merit League winners North Hykehem.

On a foggy Saturday afternoon Bourne welcomed last years League Winners North Hykehem, a team which Bourne had not recorded a win against for the previous three seasons.

Hykehem began the game the brighter of the two teams pining Bourne back to deep inside their own half unable to create any real chances. The game was being contested fiercely in the forwards with Bourne’s pack defending their lines turning the ball over to allow the home side to clear their lines.

Fifteen minutes into the game came Bourne’s first score. A ball kicked by Hykehem’s fly-half was collected by full back Calum Weston who would turn defence into attack by breaking two tackles before offloading to the inside centre Jack Berry who drew the tackle of the oncoming winger to pass inside to the ever impressive James Beanland for an easy score under the posts.

From the restart Bourne would win a penalty which Adam Binns would convert to extend Bourne’s lead to 10-0 after twenty mins. Hykehem refused the lie down and came straight back at the home side but yet again the Bourne pack proved too strong to break down resulting in no score for the travelling team. Then came a moment of pure brilliance from Bourne’s centre Jack Berry, following the fourth turnover of the game Bourne would have possession deep inside their own twenty two allowing Jack Berry to run from deep, breaking the tackle of the outside centre chipping the ball elegantly over the defending full back to collect the ball and score after running the length of the pitch. As expected Binns converted.

Bourne were flying on all cylinders and completed a first half rout of their opposition when they scored their third try just two minutes before half time. Constant pressure on the Hykehem fly half from Tom Dixon forced the opposition player to drop the ball allowing Dixon to collect and cross for his first half of season.

Bourns picked up where they left off at the start of the second half the back row of Bishop, Dixon and Hume bossing the game. The next score would ne the turn of Tom Bishop, Bourne’s number at 8. After the receiving the ball from the break down Bishop would easily step two of Hykehem’s defenders and run over to score from 25 yards out.

With the bonus point already secured Bourne showed no sign of slowing down their pressure and would score once more with fifth teen minutes left on the clock following quick thinking from vice-captain Adam Binns who would tap and go for a penalty on the oppositions twenty two to score under the posts. Binns conversion made it 38-0 and six kicks from six attempts for the fly half.

With the fog drawing in and Bourne making the changes Hykehem would capitalise and score two late tries which were well deserved for the battle that the travellers put up. However the damage was done and Bourne collected yet another home league win.

Bourne take on Skegness 1st XV away this week in the Lincolnshire Cup.
