On a dull overcast day at Fengate, with the wind blowing across the pitch, conditions were again not going to aid flowing rugby. Things looked ominous at the initial kick off when Ant Cooke knocked on giving Westwood a scrum on the 10m line, the Bourne pa

For the next 10/15 minutes play stayed in the midfield, with both teams winning their own scrums, Xanti Xipu picked up from the back of one and fed the backs, with the ball eventually getting to Neil Wood who made a good 10m run to just short of the 22. Westwood were penalised but unfortunately Dixon didn’t have his kicking boots on. From the restart Hume caught the ball and passed out to the backs, a good run for Dan Bonham led to Rossi getting the ball but unfortunately he was forced into touch 5m out. Bourne turned over the lineout with good work from Tom Douglas and Mark Thomas and were awarded a penalty. Harry Thornburn took this quickly feeding Rhys Powell and then on to Jack Berry who ran straight across all his backs to score in the opposite corner. A great kick from the touchline from Tom Dixon made the score 7-0.

Play was again stuck in the midfield for a while with conditions taking their toll, the deadlock was broken by Westwood who muscled their way up field with the forwards, and then a break from the back row led to a try under the posts, 7-7.

Bourne through the flankers of Thomas and Thornburn were putting a lot of pressure on the Westwood backs and eventually Thomas turned over the ball, the recycled ball made its way to Bonham who ran in a try from the 22, unfortunately the conversion attempt was missed. 12-7.
Straight from the kick off Bourne were back on the attack with Jack Berry taking the ball from the kick off and kicking downfield, putting Bourne back in the Westwood 22. The lineout was taken against the throw and Xipu fed Bonham to make another break through the Westwood defence, in contact he passed on to Wood who again made ground, this came to an ends at the 22 where skipper ant Cooke knocked on. Half time 12-7 to Bourne.

A couple of changes were made at half time with Wilcox coming on for Appleby and Jordan Payne for Rhys Powell. From the kick off Bourne were awarded a penalty and Tom Dixon kicked for the corner, the line out was won by Tom Douglas, but nothing came of the attack. After the next scrum the Westwood number 8 picked up a ran some 35/40m through the Bourne defence, tackles were just too high and Westwood scored under the posts to level the score and subsequently take the lead with the conversion. 12-14
Despite the early form, the 2nd half display was not as good as the first and Bourne could not break the Westwood defence, some good tackles in midfield from Ewan Jones and Payne had stopped good moves by Westwood, but unfortunately the pressure showed and a further try was conceded in the corner, unconverted 12-19.

New legs were again introduced with 15 to go Mamby coming on for Thomas and Rhys Powell back on also to steady the scrum. Mamby made an impression from the first line out, when in a shocked state the ball fell into his arms he made a massive 1m run , before going to ground and getting abused by the Westwood No8, much to his annoyance , his crys however did lead to a penalty being awarded. There should have been a score from the resulting line out, but a bad pass from Berry who had come into the line meant that the overlap was not used to its advantage.

The game was the abandoned with 11 minutes to go after lightning scared the official, his judgement was in the end correct as a 15minute rain and hail downpour would have made conditions impossible. That would have left Bourne with a bonus point but unfortunately he insisted the last 11 minutes was played under floodlights, conditions were abysmal with standing water all over the pitch, after a kick ahead Bourne were harshly penalised under their own posts, which Westwood kicked over to make the final score 12-22 and take away the bonus point.

The team has the ability to win matches but must stay switched on for the whole game and not drop their heads when the score is against them.
