IMPROVED BOURNE TEAM PERFORMANCE LEADS TO AWAY WIN
For once the weather was good for the short trip to mid table Corby and the pitch in good condition, hopefully allowing some flowing rugby. Things were looking up straight from the kick off when Ant Cooke called for the ball caught it cleanly and made a good 10m before recycling. Continued pressure through midfield by forwards Faversham and Hume kept the ball moving forward, until it was spun out by scrum half Thornburn. Tom Dixon made good ground and at the breakdown Corby were penalised, Dixon decided to kick and slotted over from about 25m out. 3-0 after 5 mins.
From the kick off Bourne again worked the play back to within 5m of the Corby line with good runs from Bonham and Ewan Jones, unfortunately the line out was lost and Corby cleared their lines, JACK Berry picked up the kick and fed Rossi who should have scored, but after a 30m run he was bundled into touch. Corby again kicked and play broke down on the Bourne 10m line. Although under pressure the pack were holding their own, the front row of Appleby, Powell and Wood were staying steady against larger opposition resulting in some quick ball from the scrum. Thornburn passed to Dixon who released just before contact to Joshua Jordan-Boddey who in turn passed to Ewan Jones who ran the ball in under the posts from 20m out, the try was converted. 10-0 after 20mins.
Adam Binns made his long awaited return from the bench at this point at scrum half, Thornburn moving into the back row and Dan Bonham now in the centre, he made an immediate impression with a late tackle, giving Corby a penaly attempt which they converted. 10-3. The kick off was chased well by the pack with Hume turning the ball over for Bourne , some hard running from Bonham led to another penalty being awarded which Tom Dixon again took with some ease. 13-3.
Jack Berry collected the ball from the kick off and made a winding run of 40m, the ball was kept alive by Mark Thomas and passed down the line to Bonham who again made good yards, play came to a stand still and was turned over. Bourne were then reduced to 14 men after an unnecessary tip tackle by Thornburn on the Corby 2nd row led to a yellow card. Corby should have capitalised but the defence in the back line led by Ewan Jones held firm and good pressure led to another penalty which Tom Dixon converted just before half time to make the score 16-3 at the break.
Corby had obviously had a talking to at half time and immediately put Bourne under pressure this resulted in 3 lots of 5m scrums all which the Bourne pack held their own in. On the 4th occaision however, after a good hook from Powell and an attempt to clear the lines a penalty was awarded for holding on. The Corby prop collected the ball from the penalty and there was no way he was going to be stopped from 8m out, the try was converted. 16-10.
Play stayed in the midfield for a while with good tackles coming in from the back row pair of Thomas and Hume and then an attack was stopped 10m out from a tackle from Jones. Berry cleared the lines with a good 50m kick up field, unfortunately Mark Thomas hadn’t read his coaching manual lately and tackled the Corby full back some 40m offside, the penalty was awarded to Corby back under the posts. 16-13.
Bourne pressure from the kick off again changed the momentum of the game , Binns showed his footballing skills kicking the ball on a good 40m before picking up and passing, the ball went wide and Thornburn should have backed himself and scored but passed resulting in the ball being tied up and another scrum. This was won by Bourne and spread wide Andy Dixon having a run this time up to 5m out from the Corby line. The resulting line out was missed by Corby and Faversham pounced on the loose ball to score,Tom Dixon converted 23-13.
This seemed to ignite Bourne again and with Paul Mamby now on the pitch anything could happen! After a maul he collected the ball and took it for a good 15m walk up field, unfortunately it was turned over but fielded again by Berry who again ran the ball back at the Corby defence. Corby did not look like scoring in fact after Bonham turned over at a ruck 30m out, Andrew Dixon came off his wing and ran a further try in for Bourne under the post, again converted by Tom Dixon 30-13.
Corby did score a late consolation try which was not converted making the final score 30-18. It just goes to show what can be achieved with a solid defensive line, no knock ons by Ant Cooke and good passes using width to make space and put the opposition under pressure. Hopefully this will be a base to work from for the remainder of the season.
