For once the sun shined at Milking Nook Drove and with the pitch also in great condition after stadium manager Nick Powell had took time to roll and mark it, everything was set for some exciting running rugby

Old Newts kicked off and put pressure on the Bourne pack and a knock on in the first play, this led to a scrum on the Bourne 10m line, unfortunately the team were not awake and the scrum was pushed back, Old Newts passed the ball along the line to score in the corner with the first move of the game, this was unconverted. 0-5
Bourne then woke up and had a good period of play, the backrow of Bonham, Hume and Faversham were putting good pressure on the opposition backs leading to a penalty in midfield.

Tom Dixon kicked for touch giving Bourne a line out 5m out, unfortunately this was lost but the clearance kick only went to Matt Ross who had a good run back down to the opposition 22 but then got tied up leading to another scrum. Although the scrum was now holding its own Old Newts still took their own ball cleanly and their No8 picking up at the base was moving them forward. The forwards worked up field to the Bourne 22 when good work from Appleby and Douglas led to the turnover. Bourne won their own scrum, Berry passed to Dixon who made a massive clearance down to the opposition 22m line.

At the resulting lineout Old Newts kicked again only to be fielded by Rossi who ran straight at the opposition and then off loaded to Jones and Andy Dixon, he cut back in side and passed to Tom Dixon who found a gap and did well to stay on his feet from a tap tackle to score just to the left of the posts, he then converted his own try. 7-5

Play was held up in midfield for the next 5 minutes before Bonham got a yellow card for hands in the ruck, this made the overlap a lot easier to find , and despite some good tackles from Hume and Berry eventually they found room and scored in the corner again, unconverted. 7-10 . Rossi chased the kick off to again put pressure on the opposition and the forward made some good ground through Wood and Appleby , unfortunately they were turned over again and spread the ball wide to again score in the corner, unconverted. 7-15.

Bourne were now back to full strength and matched the opposition, up until a 5m scrum was awarded and the Old Newts athletic No 8 picked and drove, he was stopped short by a Berry tap tackle , but the ball was recycled and a score came through the centres under the posts which was converted. 7-22. Half time.

The 2nd half again started reasonably with both wings getting a run with the ball Andy Dixon and Josh Jordan-Bonney both had good runs but they were unable to change the pressure into points.

A further yellow card was then handed out to Jack Berry again putting Bourne under pressure and it was not long until a score was again conceded under the posts. 7-29 then from the kick off their centre ran through 6 tackles to be stopped short by a tackle from Rossi only to off load and score again 2 trys in 2 minutes. 7-34.

A further score was also to come before Bourne were back to full strength unconverted, 7-39 . Tom Dixon then showed a bit of his own skills kicking over the opposition defence and collect himself he then offloaded to Ewan Jones which when stopped illegally gave Bourne a penalty on the 22 line. Neil Wood went for a trundle up pitch and once stopped Faversham also made some good ground, the ball was recycled again and Jones made his way over the try line only to be held up and was lucky to stay on the field when the red mist came over him and showed his frustration with a punch, luckily the referee saw sense.

Old Newts scored 2 further unconverted try’s taking the score to 7-49 , Bourne had its replacements on now with Harry Bower making his presence known at the break downs , Mark Thomas as busy as ever and Nogs looking for the ball desperately to show off his unique side step. A kick ahead was chased by Ewan Jones and his pressure led to Andy Dixon picking up the loose ball which he passed to Liam Croker who scored a late consolation try in the corner for Bourne. Final Score 12-49

Man of the match Matt Ross

Coaches Quote: Good pressure throughout, but lost through doing the basics wrong

Famous Rugby Quote: If the game is run properly as a professional game, you don’t need 59 old farts running rugby.
