An opening league match of the season away to Thorney was always going to be a tough match.

With 4 regular players missing on cricket duties, but after a good pre season friendly result, the squad’s spirits were still positive.

It was far from a good start though when at the kick off, confusion reigned with Thorney chasing up their kick, collecting the ball and scoring within 10 seconds, their kicker converted from the touchline. 7-0

Bourne then had the chance to chase their own kick and a determined chase by Hume, Douglas and Faversham put pressure on the Thorney pack, causing them to make a mistake and a scrum being awarded. Despite great pressure from the Thorney pack the new front row contingent of Wood, Sleight and Wilcox managed to hold things steady enough for Thornburn to get the pass away to Smith, the back line were up fast though and things got held up in midfield when Bonham took the crash ball into contact. The resulting scrum was won by Thorney who passed along the line and scored in the corner again despite a cover tackle by Rossi, the try was again converted. 14-0

For the rest of the half Bourne battled hard, with the best chance coming when a kickable penalty was awarded and they kicked for the corner. Faversham got up highest, but the forwards drive was stopped and then cleared by a determined Thorney pack. Thorney scored two further converted tries in the half making the score 28-0 at half time.

The half time team talk rejuvenated the Bourne team and they were now on the front foot, Wood and Appleby secured good ball at the breakdown and Thornburn fed the backs, a good kick through from Croker would have given Bourne a 2 man overlap but for some unknown reason the referee played no advantage and awarded a penalty.

Croker kicked for touch and Bourne had a lineout from 15m out. The ball was secured cleanly by Hume and Thornburn fed Korobulileka who had run a great line to score in the corner, unconverted. 28-5. Bourne continued to attack and a break from Hume found its way to Bonham who gave to Korobulileka to score out wide, this was again unconverted. 28-10.

Bourne should have scored again when Rossi was released after good work from Jorden-Boddey he got the ball on halfway, but unfortunately he was stopped just short of the line and Thorney cleared. Thorney did score 3 further trys 2 which they converted but they had not had it all their own way. Final score 47-10.

Bourne have a home match next week Milking Nook Drove against Bedford Swifts 3pm kick off. They train Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.45 to 8.30pm and are always looking for new players.
