It is with great pleasure that Bourne Rugby Club are to host The Annual Memorial game at Milking Nook Drove on Saturday 16th March 2013.The Club last hosted the game back in May 2009, having been played in Celle,Germany and Dheklia,Cyprus for the past couple of years.

As some of you are aware and others new to the Memorial Game.A brief resume/history of the game.
Back in January 2006, The Royal Anglian Regiment 2nd Battalion "The Poachers", a local regiment, had just returned from a 6 month Tour of Northern Ireland and prior to their redeployment to Basra,Iraq.A former Bourne player Ben Hawes who started off playing in the Minis/Juniors section, progressed onto the Senior team, was commissioned into the British Army and now a high ranking Officer- Major. Ben phoned me to see if the possibility if he could bring a team over to play our 2nds the following week. The reason being they have just returned from a full 6 month Tour Of Northern Ireland and not had a game of rugby all season and were desperate for a run out.Bourne duly obliged and I officiated the game.
The Poachers went on to win the game (80-0 ish),it didn't help Bourne as The Poachers backs were all Fijian , who played it like it was a Sevens game! Joseva Lewaicea was named Man of The Match, scoring over half his teams points, a very good rugby player who was offered full time professional rugby but declined as he was a serving British soldier..
Once back from Iraq ,Bourne took a team over to Ternhill, Nr. Shrewsbury to play them in the augural Memorial game.We have also gone to Germany on 2 different tours and most recently to Dheklia,Cyprus to play them. The Club hosted The Poachers in May 2009 and now looking to host them again on Saturday 16th March 2013.

Below is the inscription on the back of the Memorial Trophy

"The Joseva Lewaicei and Adam Morris memorial trophy".

This trophy is contested in memory of Privates Joseva Lewaicei and Adam Morris of C Company, Second Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment - "The Poachers" - who died in action on Saturday 13 May 2006 when their patrol was hit by a roadside bomb on the Qarmat AH Bridge, Basra, Iraq. Only weeks before this tragedy, the Poachers rugby team played its final game before deploying to Iraq, against Bourne, where Pte Lewaicei was named man of the match. The two teams will contest this trophy annually to celebrate the life of a talented rugby player and dedicated soldier, and the comrade who died at his side."

Yours Sincerely

Jerry King
